About us
Welcome to O-Taiko – home to the southernmost taiko group in the world!
Discover the essence of O-Taiko, a community that goes beyond drumming to unite through rhythm and cultural celebration.
Our Journey:
We are a community taiko group founded in 2009 by Henry Johnson and anchored in the School of Performing Arts at the University of Otago. Today, under the leadership of Sabrina Goh, we continue to bring the vibrant energy of Japanese-inspired drumming style to life, blending rhythm, movement, and cultural expression in a dynamic experience. And with it the connection to the community – the shared passion for taiko and learning.
Whether you’re a student, staff, or local ; everyone is invited to be part of O-Taiko. We welcome all ages and skill levels to explore drumming with us.
For events and special occasions, O-Taiko is available for bookings. Bring the dynamic energy of Japanese-inspired drumming to your gatherings. Contact us to schedule a performance that adds a rhythmic touch to your memorable moments.
Inclusive Drumming for All Ages
All are welcome at O-Taiko, from university students to adults discovering the joy of drumming. Join our community, every Thursday as we share beats that echo far beyond our practice space. Check out our Join us page.
